Meta tags are HTML markup that indicate to search engines what your website is about. These tags assist search engines to identify and categorize your website properly.
When a visitor enters a search engine looking for a website similar to yours they will enter keywords or key phrases into the search box about that topic.
Google and other search engines use the keywords a visitor types into a search box to return relevant results. Selecting keywords that a visitor is likely to use within your Meta description will help match your website to the keywords or key phrases a visitor entered in the search box.
Add Meta Tags for Your Entire Site
Click Dashboard at the top of your account, then Settings on the left column. This will bring you to the Site Settings page where you can enter your keywords in the Site Tags/Keywords field. Keywords are separated by comma and will apply to your entire website.
When you're working on a page in the Builder, click the Page Settings menu in the upper-right and select MetaTags/Description. Enter Title, description and keywords in the pop-up.
You can also access this setting via the Page Manager. Click Pages at the top of your account to reach your Pages menu.
Hover on the page you want to edit tags for and click the settings (gear button) that appears on the right. Click the first option that for MetaTags to launch the MetaTags/Description pop-up.
Recommendations for applying your Meta tags:
Identify at least three main keywords that accurately describe the content of your site and be sure to include these in your title, Meta description and body of text.
Try to limit the title of your website to less than 60 characters long, including spaces. Anything more and Google begins to truncate or cut off the text of your title.
Maintain your keywords within 200 to 500 characters. Do your best to keep your Meta description at 155 characters or less. Anything more and Google begins to truncate or cut off the text of your description.
Each of your pages should contain a unique or different title, description and body text.
A good way to research effective keywords and descriptions for your website is to ask yourself or potential visitors of your website, what words you or they would use when looking up a website similar to your own.
TIP: If you have business website that that only serves a certain geographical area it is important that you indicate this in your description. For example, if you are an advertising agency in Portland, Oregon, then include this in your descriptions instead of just putting “advertising agency". This ensure the website reaches the intended audience.
